Art Syllabus (applies to all of Mr. Herndon's classes)
The Usual Class format:
Projects are introduced in class and deadlines are determined based on the classes pace. Due dates are announced in class.
Most projects will begin with demonstrations of the process, or media done by the instructor and also include visual aids and relevant lectures.
Students will have a chance to practice in class and at home before beginning on their major assignments.
Projects will grow in complexity throughout the semester and will build on previously learned knowledge from prerequisite classes.
Homework: (every student needs a sketchbook no smaller than 8” x 10” )
Students will be given sketchbook assignments weekly to complete. In addition to this, they may be required to take photographic references, do research, or sketch ideas outside of class as they prepare for major assignments.
If students finish projects early, they are encouraged to use that time to work on their sketchbook assignments in class.
Grades:
Projects are 50% percent of your grade (This includes a student written critique sheet, at teacher's discretion)
Sketchbook / Pre-work / Vocab Test are 30%
The Final Exam is 20%
Late Grades:
-10 points off per day for late sketchbook work, if turned in within a weeks time, after that, you will receive a 50 if completed.
-10 points off per school day for late projects.
However, students have an extra day to complete projects for every excused absence.
Mr. Herndon's Cell Phone Policy:
No cell phone use (besides music in headphones) during projects.
(not responsible for any missed info when wearing headphones)
Warning: You will sometimes learn more from conversations you overhear of the teacher critiquing other student's work, and things the teacher remembers randomly in the middle of class than in just the lesson intros. Also, you can potentially weaken a positive class environment and your social skills if you decide to use earbuds. The choice is yours.
Music should be quiet enough so that I can't hear it, and so that you can hear me though your headphones
No cell phones are to be used for art references (print it out from our computers, this saves your battery and keeps you honest)
After clean up, it is ok to use your cell phone during the last 5 minutes of class.
Cell Phone Disciplinary steps:
Warning(s)
Teacher takes it up until the end of class
Call home
Send phone to Principle
*If there are important or emergency calls, tell me up front and ask to step out in the hall, before I get on to you.
Art Idea Policy:
Pinterest is a no, no. I'll treat it like you cheated on a test if you copy something from Pinterest. You will be given the choice of taking a 0 or doing the project over.
The way you should work:
Brainstorm / Sketch / Develop Concept first, then do Photo or Web Research and find References later.
*Pro Artist learn to be good photographers and good life observers, so that they can use their own images, instead of stealing images from other artist photographers.
